Hi, I’m Julie. Working from my studio in Rock on Cornwall’s Camel Estuary, I create quietly distinctive jewellery using precious metals and carefully selected natural gemstones.

I've always been drawn to objects that have earned their place in people's lives. A sense of permanence; not shouting for attention but staying with us, quietly gathering meaning and bearing the marks of a life lived.

Belief

I love naturally weathered surfaces shaped by time and the elements. Their contours, subtle variations and tactile textures reveal a gradual transformation, where every mark contributes to the overall effect.

I see a reflection of this in ourselves. As we move through life, our experiences leave their own marks. They challenge us. Soften our edges or create them. They change us. For better or worse, they shape who we become as we journey through life.

Expression

Sculpture has always inspired me: its physical presence and ability to draw us in-to move around it, look through it and experience its relationship with the surrounding space.

That appreciation naturally finds its way into my work, where I explore form on an intimate, wearable scale.

Materials

Formed over millions of years by geological processes, no two natural gemstones are exactly the same. Like us, each reflects its growth, with variations in experience bringing character and individuality to each.

Precious metals are both enduring and adaptable. They can be shaped by hand, worn every day, repaired, and reworked - all the while bearing witness to the life lived alongside them.

These are the materials I choose to work with, and responsible sourcing ensures respect for people and planet.

Design & Making

Technical skill and design judgement work hand in hand. Together they inform every decision I make.

Precise construction. Reassuring weight. Balanced proportions. Stones that belong in their settings, rather than simply being held by them. A finish that complements the piece rather than competing for attention.

Individually these details may go unnoticed, but together they shape jewellery that feels comfortable and quietly confident.

Experience

My creative practice has developed over two decades, refined by training in drawing, painting, jewellery making and gemmology. There’s always more to explore and understand, and that curiosity is an important part of how I work.

Before establishing Salt Stone Studio, I founded The Stone Wall Gallery. Based in the Scottish Borders, it included an art gallery, sculpture garden and my own studio, where I ran popular painting workshops with visiting artists.

This has shaped the way I see, giving me an instinct for form, balance, line and colour that continues to inform every piece I create today.

Ethics

With a legal and finance background, my past corporate work included ESG (sustainability, responsible supply chains and fair working practices). That experience now guides the questions I ask and the choices I make when sourcing materials for the studio.

I follow the internationally recognised standards for sourcing and disclosure set by the World Jewellery Confederation (CIBJO).
